12/7/2023 0 Comments Traffic spike meaningThis period can be a few hours or even days. Once you've reached the target, however, you maintain this load for a more extended period. Still, there's a ramp-up process, and you don't typically start with the target load. Unlike stress tests, you don't increase traffic to the point of failure, but rather stop ramping up at the expected average load. The defining factor of a soak test is its duration. Soak testing is also known as endurance testing, capacity testing, or longevity testing. Soak testing is a long-running type of testing that checks how an application performs under a growing number of users or draining tasks happening over an extended period of time. You could also implement a "step-up spike test", in which you gradually increase the height of each spike. To put it differently: you can think of the test load as a primarily flat line with a few spikes, hence the name.Ī spike test could stay in average load for eight minutes, immediately ramp up to double the request count for two minutes, go back to previous levels, and repeat it six times, so the whole test runs for an hour. Unlike most stress tests that only increase load towards the point of failure and soak tests that increase the traffic and keep it constant afterward, ramping up and down is essential for spike tests. Spikes in traffic can either happen randomly or after constant intervals. In a spike test, testers increase the number of requests very quickly up to stress levels, decrease it again, and continue running the test to assess performance. The main difference between soak and spike is the way they ramp up and ramp down. The main difference between stress testing, soak testing, and spike testing is that soak and spike are both forms of stress tests. ![]() What's the Difference Between Soak Testing vs. What's the Difference Between Soak Testing vs.Alerting, combined with mapping that identifies where problems are coming from, empowers IT admins to quickly and efficiently troubleshoot most any problem.ĭirk Paessler is CEO and Founder of Paessler AG.Soak testing. In all cases, it is critical for IT departments to establish a baseline for their network traffic so they can understand when it is peaking, and set up appropriate alerts to notify them. Some problems are more serious and involve hardware failures or router issues, which need to be handled with care and can require spending on new equipment. These are not the only causes of traffic spikes, but it is a good example of common and preventable problems that plague networks. Similar to on-premises backups, these need to be scheduled carefully and performed off-hours. While those present certain advantages, one disadvantage is that uploading massive backups to the cloud causes serious load issues. Some IT departments opt to use cloud-based tools for backup. They also are very network intensive, and if the timing is off, can sop bandwidth during working hours. Many backup products are scheduled to run at certain time intervals, or at certain times of day. Malware outbreaks and hacking attempts can cause spikes in network traffic, often to either mask other malicious activity or because the malware is attempting to force login to devices. Virus scans and software updates distributed inside the LAN are a very common source of traffic spikes, and can be easily dealt with by changing scan settings and performing updates during non-critical business hours. Many of the causes of sudden traffic spikes are security-related, be it malicious traffic, DNS attacks, or sometimes, even the AV itself. The solution involves accessing the target mail server to deny access rights to the remote server. ![]() Incompatibility between the two SMTP implementations creates a sort of endless feedback loop that sees the same email going through the server every five minutes, chewing up bandwidth in the process. It is not uncommon for a remote mail server to continuously deliver the same email through a company’s servers, even if the target recipient denied acceptance. Identifying the problems behind bandwidth drains can be difficult, so to help, I’ve put together a list of the five most common causes of sudden traffic spikes. Availability is critical for IT departments of all sizes, and slow bandwidth creates productivity problems and even outages that have a real effect on businesses. One of the most common problems network monitoring tools are employed to solve are problems with bandwidth. The challenge, of course, is to move quickly to identify what issue is causing the problem. This new information gives them the power to act on problems intelligently, oftentimes before they end up affecting end users. ![]() When IT departments implement network monitoring tools, they get swarmed with data that they did not have before.
